A hydraulic elevator needs a small power unit near the shaft and works well where ceiling clearance is tight, while a traction elevator runs on a lighter steel-belt drive that suits taller multi-floor homes with a bit more headroom. The right choice depends on your building's pit depth, top clearance, and available power supply — not on which technology is "newer."

A hydraulic home elevator lifts the cabin using fluid pressure from a valve system and lowers it by gravity, without the overhead machine room or counterweight a traditional traction lift needs. That makes it a common retrofit choice for existing multi-story houses where adding equipment space isn't an option.

A standard hydraulic home elevator needs roughly a 1,100×1,100mm shaft, while a narrow-shaft lift platform can fit into a space as small as 900×900mm.
